Is this the same as a civil defence siren?

Yes — IS 6026 is the Indian Standard for hand operated sirens used in civil defence, factory safety, and emergency management. The same standard is referenced by factory inspectorates and OISD for backup alerting requirements.

How loud is it really?

90–105 dB at 1 metre. In open air, audible to approximately 200–400 metres. Effective enough to alert a factory floor or a neighbourhood block. Not a substitute for a motor siren for campus-wide coverage.

Can it be wall mounted?

Yes. Supplied with a bracket for fixed wall or post mounting. Can also be kept unmounted for portable use by security personnel.

How is this different from the small hand sirens sold in the market?

There is a widespread practice in the Indian market of selling very small, lightweight hand sirens — often imported — and claiming large sound ranges of 500 metres or more. In product photographs, these can appear similar to a genuine industrial hand siren because the angle and scale are not obvious.

In reality, these units are typically 200–300 grams, palm-sized, and produce 70–85 dB at best — adequate for a classroom or sports ground, not a factory floor. The wailing disc diameter and impeller dimensions are far smaller than the minimums specified in IS 6026.

Why IS 6026 compliance matters: IS 6026 specifies minimum impeller diameter, disc slot dimensions, and rotation speed requirements to produce a genuine wailing tone above 90 dB. Undersized units fail to meet these thresholds. During statutory safety audits — particularly under the Factories Act and OISD inspections — non-IS 6026 compliant hand sirens are commonly rejected and the site is asked to replace them.
