Why a motor siren for large areas?

Electronic sirens lose audibility rapidly beyond 300–500 metres in high ambient noise environments. Motor-driven rotating sirens produce a wailing tone that cuts through industrial noise and can be heard across multi-kilometre distances. For OISD-117 and ERDMP compliance, motor sirens are specified for main plant alerting.

How is coverage distance calculated?

How is coverage distance calculated? What does it mean in practice?

The coverage range stated in our specifications is the diametrical range in still air — a theoretical maximum under ideal conditions. On the ground, actual audible range depends on several factors:

  • Mounting height must be at least 9 metres (30 feet) above ground — insufficient height dramatically reduces effective range
  • Buildings, trees, and structures block and absorb sound — a row of warehouses can halve the range
  • Wind: tailwind adds range, headwind reduces it significantly
  • Ambient noise at the site reduces effective audibility

Practical example — 0.5 km model:

  • Low noise area (60 dB ambient): ~0.31 km actual range
  • Medium noise area (80 dB ambient): ~0.10 km actual range
  • High noise area (100 dB ambient): ~0.03 km actual range

We recommend selecting the model with 1.5× to 2× your required coverage distance. Most sites with 2 km diagonal select the 5 km model (PC-MS-3D-500).

What is the difference between single phase and three phase models?

Models up to PC-MS-1D-325 (3.25 km) run on 230V single phase — standard factory power available at most distribution boards. Models from PC-MS-3D-500 (5 km) upward require 415V three phase, as the larger motors need three-phase power for starting torque and continuous running.

If your site only has single phase available at the siren location, the maximum model is PC-MS-1D-325. For larger coverage, a three-phase supply needs to be extended to the siren mounting point.

Can the motor siren be triggered automatically or remotely?

Yes. The motor siren requires a dry contact or relay input to start and stop. This can be provided by:

  • Automatic Siren Controller — scheduled RTC-based triggering for shift change, lunch, and fire drill
  • GSM Remote Siren — SMS-triggered activation from any mobile phone
  • Distributed Siren System — centralised control of multiple sirens across a plant network
  • Manual push button or PLC output
Do you supply a motor starter with the siren?

Yes — the motor siren is supplied with a matching DOL (direct-on-line) starter panel. For three phase models, a star-delta starter is supplied where required. The starter is pre-wired to the siren motor and includes overload protection.
